EXCELLENT technique for those people who can not do FREE MOTION QUILTING for what ever reason. I use this on my baby quilts and smaller projects. I really found the book helpful when I broke my wrist and was recovering from the surgery.... I could finish a project will very little stress on my arm and hand.

After reading the raving reviews from Amazon I ordered this book and I am absolutely unimpressed with the content. The author describes as big advantage of "her" technique to quilt her designs that she doesn't mark her quilts. She uses paper patterns instead that she pins on her quilt and sews around the edges. One chapter is dedicated to how to create your own shapes (nothing earth-shattering and nothing sophisticated). Noteworthy is that only heavyweight threads are used (30 and 40 wt), so don't expect too much diversity.

The biggest disappointment is in my opinion that the author fails to mention how to handle the bulk of the quilt and how to pivot the quilt to be actually able to sew any of those designs she presents in her book. I wouldn't know to who this book was aimed? It is useless for advanced sewers as there is nothing new in it and it is useless for beginners as well as it doesn't show how to actually do the work (not one photo about how it is actually done). After all this book has very little information and I didn't find it useful at all. The designs didn't inspire me.

*I'm updating this review as I read. I have yet to get into the meat of her technique descriptions, so the other reviewer might have a great point about there not being enough instruction.*

This is a great clear, concise, and informative introduction for people who know how to use their sewing machine, but are new to quilting and machine quilting. While a lot of the ideas are things I've started to come up with on my own, Mary's opinionated and intelligent-sounding descriptions make me far more confident that I'm on the right track and have helped me solve some peskier problems.

    Introduction
The tips on thread, batting, and needle combinations are a great primer for someone like me who doesn't really know much about needle choice or thread weights. I love her descriptions of specific batting brands and the best ways to work with each of them. I also found the suggestions on seam pressing for various quilting types to be new ideas and very useful.

If you can't do free-motion quilting, this book reminds you of the many easy patterns you can stitch with your walking foot and feed dogs down. It's all stuff you probably know already, but well presented.

Mary Mashuta is a great teacher, obviously! She must be because she writes with clarity and concision. Her directions for machine quilting are easy to follow. Whether a beginner, intermediate or advanced quilter one can learn something from Mary Mashuta in this book.

Amazingly creative. I bought this new and it was worth the full price. I love the way Mary talks. "We shall see..."

Very well written information for techniques that I agree with: using your walking foot to produce good quilting. The quilt illustrations were dated and not inspirational.
