This is a great read aloud for young kids to help them in empathizing with new students from a different culture There are lots of springboard discussions that could be used with the character s actions and the theme of the story.

I would recommend this book because it has a great and simple message for you children to learn about kindness and empathy It would interest young children because it has colorful, detailed realistic pictures on each page It also uses language that is easy for young children to understand As an educator, one might use this book to create lessons and conversation about empathy and accepting new people Although various languages are not used in abundance in this book, the message is clear that one of the children speaks a different language than the rest of his class.

When Gabe walks into school, Johnny makes all sorts of assumptions about him He treats him very coldly and displayed bully like actions toward him However, Gabe not understanding what is going on, tries his best to use body language to fit in With his good attitude and lack of verbal communication, Gabe soon becomes the popular kid in the class This leaves Johnny with mixed feelings when a spark goes off and he soon realizes how we can all be friends despite our differences This book is just amazing First I want to point out how the author shows emotions Gabe is feeling sad in the beginning and then Johnny feels bad Both kids are filled with confusion until they learn how to deal with their emotions Another important point this book brings out is how to deal with social differences Yes Gabe did not speak the language of the class, but this does not mean he could not communicate in other ways Overall this book is amazing I felt myself drawn to the story I think it is a great read to any class with very diverse students I received this book in exchange for an honest review All opinions are mine and were in no way influenced by outside sources I am a professional blogger at Little Lady Plays

Summary This story is about a little boy who is an ELL student, Gabe, who is new to the school A little boy in Gabe s new class is not very nice toward him He calls out Gabe s differences Johnny got upset when the rest of his class welcomed Gabe and were nice to him Gabe tried being nice to Johnny, and eventually, Johnny accepted him He understood how Gabe felt learning a language when Johnny was learning a tricky soccer move Evaluation I love this book I think that is a very important book for students to be exposed to I think this is a story that a lot of kids can relate to, by having a new student in class Teaching Idea You could use this book to teach empathy, kindness, and diversity This would be a great book for an interactive read aloud for the whole class You could even do a follow up hands on activity with this.

I enjoyed reading this story because it relates to the perspective of many young children, children whose lives are moved from things they have only ever known to an entirely new country with new barriers I think this book is a great example of teaching children how to embrace difference and to always share kindness In this story, kindness can be symbolized by the delicious treat many of us used to drink as a child, chocolate milk.

I like the discussion questions at the beginning and tips at the end for working with ELLs The book discusses making assumptions, empathy skills, friendship, and bridging communication gaps or differences.

Too outright preachy and heavy handed but did like the tips for assisting English Language Learners.
