I loved reading all of Denis O Connor s books though this one has been heart wrenching to read Now a retired psychologist and teacher he has bought Owl Cottage once again and lives there happily with his wife Here he has written a heart wrenching memoir of his childhood which was in many ways a deeply unhappy one due to his cruel and abusive father There is one incident in particular which brought me to tears concerning the depths his father was prepared to go to in his strange hatred for his son Helped by the love of his Grandmother and strengthened by his early love of animals and nature in general he struggles on through some shocking incidents and reaches his teen age years No cats in this one, but there are some fascinating and beautiful descriptions of his interactions with various creatures There is sorrow, heartache and joy among all his growing years This memoir ends when just as he is about to enter Hull University he is called up into National Service As with all of his books there is this simplicity within his descriptions of his life I recommend this book to anyone with a love of animal and nature in general.
